과거형 (Simple past)의 이해와 연습

 

[1] 예문 연습

 

 

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian musician and composer. He lived from 1756 to 1791. He started composing at the age of five and wrote more than 600 pieces of music. He was only 35 years old when he died.

 

울프강 아마데우스 모짜라트는 오스트리아의 음악가이자 작곡가였다. 그는 1756년부터 1791년까지 살았다. 그는 5살때부터 작곡을 시작하였고 600곡 이상을 작곡하였다. 그가 죽었을 때, 단지 35살이었다.

 

Lived/started/wrote/was/died 는 모두 "과거형(simple past)"이다.

 

 

[2] 과거형은 일반동사에 -ed 가 붙는다 (규칙동사, regular verbs)

 

I work in a travel agency now. Before that I worked in a department store.

나는 지금 여행사에서 일한다. 그 전에는 백화점에서 일했다.

We invited them to our party, but they decided not to come.

우리는 그들을 우리 파티에 초대했으나, 그들은 오지 않기로 결정하였다.

The police stopped me for speeding.

경찰은 나를 과속으로 세웠다 (정지시켰다).

She passed her exam because she studied very hard.

그녀는 그녀의 시험을 통과했다, 왜냐하면 그녀는 매우 열심히 공부했기 때문이다.

 

하지만, 많은 동사들이 불규칙적(irregular)이다. 즉, 동사가 -ed 로 끝나는 형태가 아니다.

 

write → wrote	Mozart wrote more than 600 pieces of music. 모짜르트는 600곡 이상을 작곡했다.
see → saw	We saw Rosa in town a few days ago. 우리는 몇 일 전에 로사를 마을에서 보았다.
go → went	I went to the movies three times last week. 나는 지난 주에 영화 보러 세번이나 갔다.
cost → cost	This house cost $89,000 in 1996.  이 집값은 1996년에 89,000달러이다.

 

[3] 질문하거나 부정을 말 할때, "did/didn't + 동사원형(base form)"을 사용한다.

 

A: Did you go out last night?

B: Yes, I went to the movies, but I didn't enjoy the film much.

 

A: 지난 밤에 밖에 나갔었니?

B: 어, 나 영화보러 갔어, 근데 그 영화는 별로였어.

 

"When did Mr. Thomas die?" "About then years ago."

"토마스 씨가 연제 돌아가셨지요?" "10년 전에요."

 

They didn't invite her to the party, so she didn't go.

그들은 파티에 그녀를 초대하지 않아서, 그녀는 가지 않았어.

 

"Did you have time to write the letter?" "No, I didn't."

"너 편지 쓸 시간 있어? "아니, 없어."

 

do는 (조동사가 아니라) 문장에서 의미를 가진 주요 동사일 수도 있으니 주의!

 

I didn't do anything. (I didn't anything으로 사용하지 않음)

난 아무것도 하지 않았어.

 

[4] be동사(am/is/are)의 과거형은 "was/were" 이다.

 

I/he/she/it      was/wasn't

we/you/they   were/weren't

 

was    I/he/she/it?

were  we/you/they?

 

부정문이나 의문문에서 did를 was/were과 함께 사용하지는 않는다.

 

I was angry because they were late.

그들이 늦어서 난 화가 났어.

 

Was the weather good when you were on vacation?

너가 휴가 갔을 때 날씨가 좋았어?

 

They weren't able to come because they were so busy.

그들은 너무 바빠서 올 수가 없었어.

 

Did you go out last night, or were you too tired?

너 지난 밤에 밖에 나갔니, 아니면 엄청 피곤했어?
